Our members
Who we are
The fact that we have come so far in such a short space of time is a testament to the skills and commitment of our members, in particular our co-founders, Bronwen Newton and Jesse Matthews.
Our Project Navigator and co-founder, Bronwen is involved in the macro and micro of the project. The perfect mix of property developer and ex-Playcentre mum, her negotiation skills are second-to-none. She says negotiating with mothers is much harder than anything she’s experienced in the boardroom. The speed with which our project is progressing is due in no small part to Bronwen’s tireless enthusiasm and pragmatism and optimism.
Jesse Matthews is our lead architect and, together with Bronwen, brought the Urban Habitat Collective into being. His work in identifying potential sites, before the project even started, meant we could hit the ground running.
Each of our members is an active part of a working circle (design and build, finance and legal, communication and recruitment, and community), helping us get to know our future neighbours, while progressing efficiently towards a big goal with a big group of people. Read more about them below (while we wait on pictures, enjoy the randomly selected icons – any resemblance to actual persons is entirely coincidental).
See what some of our members have to say!
Marie
I hail from Taranaki, but have lived mostly in Wellington. Mother of two adult daughters. Working most recently as a public health researcher. Looking forward to living without a car, enjoying the community and making the most of Newtown.
Derek
I have lived in Wellington since 2011 but originally am from Whangarei. I am now retired but was a manager in the Polytechnic system for most of my career. I am interested in green politics, motorcycling and history.

I call Wellington my home for the last 18 years now, with a few in between stints in Hamburg, and living in a housebus in New Zealand with my whanau, Hannah, Otis & Elliott. I try spending as much time as possible at the beach, playing guitar, and making stuff out of wood.
Hannah
Originally a farm girl from North Canterbury, I now pass as a card-carrying Wellington creative, working day-to-day on everything from branding to copywriting, illustration to web design. A maker and a doer by nature, I’ve always had a project on the go, but the Urban Habitat Collective is my biggest project yet. Together with my family, I’m counting down the days until we get to move in!
Otis
It will be really fun when my friends can come over to play with me in the kids’ common room. There will be a ladder up the wall, and then monkey bars, and from a certain point there’ll be posts that you can stand on, and there’ll be a rope that you can swing back on to the top bunk with.
Elliott
First I pack my bag, then I put my shoes and jacket on, and then I put my helmet on and get my scooter to go to school. After school at home I’ll go to play with Wanda, and then we have tea in the shared space.
Jesse
I am originally from Northland and have made Wellington home for the past 15 years. As an architect I have always had a passion for finding better ways to live in New Zealand’s natural and urban environments, and with my colleagues at Spacecraft Architects feel very privileged to be the designers of our future building.
Linda
I come from India and Kuwait, and have been in Wellington since 2012. I currently spend my time studying at Victoria University and travelling around the world to meet family. I’m excited about building my first home in a city I love and the prospects of connected living.
Bronwen
I am a lawyer, playcentre mother, property developer – not a very common skill set. I’m finding it really satisfying to use these skills in this inspiring project. As a card carrying extrovert I am loving getting to know all the people who have joined or shown interest in the community. Sam and I have two lovely teenage boys, Noah and Louis, and a smiley dog called Wanda. It’s is going to be interesting to see how we all adapt to apartment life.
Sam
I’m a software developer originally from Nelson. My latest interest is tandem mountain biking with Brownen. I enjoy board games and have a love/hate relationship with golf.
Louis
I go to Wellington High. My favourite thing is playing PC games with my fellow gamer mates.
Noah
I’m too busy snow-boarding…
Wanda
Awoo woawaoo awauuooo ruff. Yap yap (oops), Elliott bow wow arrrrff wuff ruff.
Mary
I’m a Nelsonian but have lived most of my life on the Kapiti Coast and Wellington.
I am a physiotherapist by trade but having lived on, and bought up 3 boys on a farm out of Waikanae, my career transformed into production Horticulture, which I could do from home.
I went on to manage an orchard, vineyards and tertiary Horticulture students in Central Otago and the lower North Island.
I retired in 2013, and have continued to work voluntarily in Horticulture in a revegetation project.
It has been great to be involved with the development of the UHC project for 18 months, am delighted to be a member of the Collective, and looking forward to the diversity of our fabulous Community.

Living in apartments and a house with younger people, while doing mature OE in Germany and Scotland, gave me new views of different lifestyle options. I grew up in Auckland and lived in Wellington in houses on quarter acre sections and am now keen for a change and the opportunities of a cohousing community. I’m a grandmother, Wikipedia editor, seasonal fruit picker and jam maker for Community Fruit, and ‘explorer’ of Wellington’s walking tracks.
Ian
Born in Wellington, I am a retired electrical engineer with a passion for energy efficiency, sustainable energy, and electric bikes. Looking forward to using the UHC shared EV. I love installing solar plus battery power systems for off-grid or on-grid homes and businesses.
James
Now in my second year on the Doctoral Programme at Wellington Victoria University. Except for the odd bit of baking not a huge amount spare time currently as I also work full time at Wellington hospital. However am looking forward to moving into 136 Adelaide Road!

Originally from Nelson, I’ve lived in Wellington for 20 years apart from 5 years enjoying Sweden, Norway and Mexico. Passion for working in public policy for a prosperous and sustainable future. Love warm, open and fun people – best combined with getting into nature, camping, tramping and mountain biking.
Sherryn
I’m a prodigal kiwi who, after most of the last 26 years overseas, has recently returned and I have landed on my feet in finding the UHC. I’m an animal lover with three fur babies of my very own, a taurean who loves beautiful things, and a capitalist in recovery.
Alfa, Romeo & Martini
We three siblings are the proud owners of Sherryn and love sunbathing, grooming each other, and looking fixedly at dark corners and freaking Sherryn out.
